Wenn man mit Katharina Schultens über Poesie spricht, dann spürt man die große Liebe, die sie dem Genre entgegenbringt. Die vielfach ausgezeichnete Lyrikerin ist seit 2022 Leiterin des Haus für Poesie in Berlin. Das Haus hat sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, zeitgenössische Poesie in die Öffentlichkeit zu bringen, sicht- und hörbar zu machen. Und die diesjährige 25. Jubiläumsausgabe des Poesiefestivals zeigt auf beeindruckende Weise, dass ihm dies über die Jahrzehnte auch gelungen ist. „Wenn man den Menschen gute zeitgenössische Gedichte zeigt oder vorliest oder sie in den sozialen Medien postet, dann stellen viele fest, dass sie damit viel mehr anfangen können als sie ursprünglich gedacht haben“, beobachtet Katharina Schultens immer wieder. Offenbar gebe es ein großes Bedürfnis danach. „Aber weil viel zu wenig bekannt ist, was für ein Schatz zeitgenössische Poesie ist, organisieren wir neben unserem Hausprogramm das Festival“, führt sie aus.
Mit großem Erfolg, wie gut besuchte Veranstaltungen zeigen. Für Katharina Schultens hängt das auch damit zusammen, dass Lyrik von allen Kunstformen die größte Kraft habe, einen Raum tief in unserem Inneren zu öffnen. Plötzlich erkenne man etwas, was man vorher nicht gesehen habe, schwärmt sie von den schönsten Poesieerlebnissen. Dazu passt, dass sie sich in diesem Jahr entschlossen hätten, das Festival unter kein bestimmtes Motto zu stellen. „Wir haben dieses Mal so unterschiedliche Themen, dass es einfach nicht passen würde, an alle ein Etikett zu kleben“, erklärt Katharina Schultens.
Kein Motto, viele Themen
Es wird um „Writing Change“ gehen, um „Class“ und „Identity“ oder auch darum, wie man über „Histories“ schreibt. Die Themenabende laden ein, miteinander ins Gespräch zu kommen. Rund 40 Dichterinnen und Dichter aus der ganzen Welt reisen an, um ihre Werke in ihrer Muttersprache zu präsentieren. Übersetzt wird ins Deutsche und ins Englische.
Und natürlich wird das 25. Festival auch gefeiert. Die Festrede zur Eröffnung hält Büchnerpreisträger Marcel Beyer. Zwischen dem 5. und dem 15. Juli schwärmt die Poesie dann hinaus in die Stadt. An verschiedenen Orten wird es Poets‘ Corners geben. Berliner Kieze von Marzahn bis Steglitz mutieren dann zur Bühne für die Dichtkunst, mal von Ausstellungen, Musik und Performances begleitet oder einfach als purer Wortbeitrag in einem Café. Dieses Angebot ist ebenso kostenlos wie die Wochenend-Lesungen mit Lyrikmarkt im Außenbereich des silent green, dem diesjährigen Veranstaltungsort. Hier und in der Stadt treten etwa 80 weitere internationale, in Berlin lebende Poeten auf.
Den Abschluss bildet am 20. Juli die lange Nacht der Poesie und die feierliche Berliner Rede zur Poesie am 21. Juli. „Poesie“, wünscht sich Katharina Schultens, „soll einfach sein, was sie ist. Man muss nicht studiert haben oder mit germanistischen Fachbegriffen um sich werfen, um sie zu verstehen. Poesie ist für alle da.“

25 years poetry festival in Berlin
When you talk to Katharina Schultens about poetry, you can feel the great love she has for the genre. The highly acclaimed poet has been the director of the Haus für Poesie in Berlin since 2022. The house is dedicated to bringing contemporary poetry to the public, making it visible and audible. And this year’s 25th anniversary edition of the poetry festival impressively shows that it has succeeded in doing so over the decades. “When you show people good contemporary poems or read them aloud or post them on social media, many realize that they can relate to them much more than they originally thought,” Katharina Schultens often observes. Apparently, there is a great demand for it. “But because too little is known about what a treasure contemporary poetry is, we organize the festival in addition to our regular program,” she explains.
With great success, as well-attended events show. For Katharina Schultens, this is also due to the fact that poetry, of all art forms, has the greatest power to open a space deep within us. Suddenly, you recognize something that you hadn’t seen before, she enthuses about the most beautiful poetry experiences. This fits well with their decision this year not to place the festival under a specific motto. “This time, we have such diverse themes that it simply wouldn’t be appropriate to label them all,” Katharina Schultens explains. The themes will include “Writing Change,” “Class,” and “Identity,” as well as how to write about “Histories.” The themed evenings invite people to engage in conversation. Around 40 poets from all over the world will travel to present their works in their native languages, with translations into German and English.
And of course, the 25th festival will also be celebrated. The opening keynote will be given by Büchner Prize winner Marcel Beyer. Between July 5 and 15, poetry will spread throughout the city. There will be Poets’ Corners in various locations. Berlin neighborhoods from Marzahn to Steglitz will transform into stages for poetry, sometimes accompanied by exhibitions, music, and performances, or simply as pure word contributions in a café. This offer is as free of charge as the weekend readings with a poetry market in the outdoor area of the silent green, this year’s venue. About 80 more international poets living in Berlin will perform here and throughout the city. The festival will conclude on July 20 with the long night of poetry and the ceremonial Berlin speech on poetry on July 21. “Poetry,” wishes Katharina Schultens, “should simply be what it is. You don’t have to have studied or throw around literary jargon to understand it. Poetry is for everyone.”
