Sechs Freunde: Man kocht füreinander, probiert aus, hat Spaß, ist gesellig. Sechs Freunde, die noch eine weitere Leidenschaft teilen, und das ist Jazz. Schon seit Jahren komponiert jedes Bandmitglied von Solstice und ist erfolgreich mit diversen Jazzprojekten unterwegs. Was liegt da nicht näher, als aus beiden Leidenschaften – Kochen und Musik – ein Ganzes zu machen?
Wie kam es zu der Idee, ein Jazzalbum zu produzieren, das sich mit Essen beschäftigt?
Solstice: “The idea for the band grew organically out of a series of dinner parties where we cooked for each other. It seemed natural for us to compose an album inspired by conviviality, fine food and the art of cooking”. As the title of our debut album ‘Alimentation’ implies, a large amount of inspiration for the tunes we write comes from our shared enjoyment of eating and cooking good food. Between us we also have a diverse range of interests and musical influences that feed into our compositions.”
Und so finden sich auf dem Album Titel mit Namen wie „Ultimate Big Cheese“, „Porridge Morning“ oder „Avocado Deficit“ inspiriert von Reisen nach Teneriffa und dem Biss in eine Avocado nach 20 Jahren Abstinenz oder von der Liebe zu Käse. Aber auch Künstlerkollegen wie Björk, Chick Corea, oder Benjamin Britten hinterließen ihre Spuren in den Songs von Solstice.
Man spürt den Ursprung der Songs, die Geselligkeit des Abends, die Lust am Essen und Kochen mit jedem Ton. Wie ist das für die Musiker? Verliert das Musikprojekt an Charme, wenn man es plötzlich professionell behandeln muss – jenseits von Küchentisch und Spontaneität des Abends?
Solstice: “The fact that all the musicians in this band have been friends for many years only serves to add a sense of warmth and kinship to the project. Because we have played together in various combinations and been exposed to broadly similar sets of influences over that time, there is a commonality to our individual compositions, and a oneness to our approach to music in general. And, whilst of course it is ultimately a professional setting, there is an informality and sense of being relaxed in each other’s presence both musically and socially that is a great basis on which to create original music.”
„Alimentation“ ist das Debütalbum. Sind weitere gemeinsame Projekte geplant?
Solstice: “We are launching the album on the 7th December at the Vortex in Dalston (Watch out for food related surprises if you’re planning on coming!) and then we have a comprehensive British tour through the first half of 2017. After that, we’re planning a second album – there are already ideas percolating that will be explored on the tour, and through the second half of next year we very much hope to be doing some gigs in Europe. We’re definitely looking on this as an extended banquet, with a range of courses. Solstice doesn’t do Fast Food!“
