Das waren noch Zeiten, als ein Streichquartettabend – frei nach Goethe – noch ein Gespräch von „vier vernünftigen Leuten“ war. Da hingen Haydn und Beethoven als Fixsterne am Streichquartetthimmel und die Welt schien in Ordnung. Diese Zeiten sind vorbei.
Heutzutage gibt es offene Diskurse statt vernünftiger Gespräche, die Fixsterne Haydn und Beethoven leuchten immer noch – haben jedoch Gesellschaft bekommen, und statt liebgewonnener Gewohnheiten ist auf einmal alles anders. Und das ist gut so! Denn sonst hätte man vermutlich nie Gelegenheit gehabt, eine so aufregende Formation wie das North Sea String Quartet zu hören. Das niederländische Ensemble pflegt ein ziemlich buntes Repertoire fernab der alten Klassiker, aber immer neugierig auf die Entdeckung neuer klanglicher Welten. Ihr musikalischer Hintergrund ist dabei mindestens so bunt wie die Musik, die sie spielen.
Das tun sie mit einer geradezu ansteckenden Energie, wie „Splunge“ – ihre neueste Produktion – auf unnachahmliche Weise vormacht. Viele der von den Ensemblemitgliedern selbst komponierten Stücke haben improvisatorischen Charakter, auch die auskomponierten, die immer wieder durch improvisatorische Elemente angereichert werden. Dazu kommt ein ziemlich bunter cross-over-Mix aus Jazz, Pop, Funk, zuweilen ist auch eine Prise Avantgarde dabei, und einer schier unbändigen Experimentier- und Musizierlaune. So eröffnet das NSSQ neue Hörräume, überrascht immer wieder und macht Lust darauf, diese neuen Welten zu entdecken, zumal sie auch spieltechnisch mit allen Wassern gewaschen sind.
Das Ergebnis fetzt, klingt ebenso authentisch wie hinreißend, macht süchtig und passt in keine Schublade. Und das ist gut so!

The North Sea String Quartet: A New Era of String Quartets Between Jazz, Pop, and Avant-garde
Those were the days when an evening of a string quartet – to paraphrase Goethe – was still a conversation among “four sensible people.” Back then, Haydn and Beethoven were the fixed stars in the string quartet firmament, and the world seemed in order. Those times are over.
Nowadays, there are open discourses instead of reasonable conversations; the fixed stars Haydn and Beethoven still shine brightly, but they have gained company. And instead of beloved habits, everything is suddenly different. And that’s a good thing! Otherwise, we would probably never have had the opportunity to hear such an exciting formation as the North Sea String Quartet. The Dutch ensemble cultivates a pretty colorful repertoire far from the old classics, but always curious to discover new sonic worlds. Their musical background is at least as colorful as the music they play.
They do this with an almost infectious energy, as “Splunge” – their latest production – showcases in an inimitable way. Many of the pieces composed by the ensemble members themselves have an improvisational character, including the fully composed ones, which are repeatedly enriched with improvisational elements. Added to this is a quite colorful crossover mix of jazz, pop, funk, sometimes even a touch of avant-garde, and an almost boundless spirit of experimentation and music-making. This way, the NSSQ opens up new auditory spaces, surprises again and again, and makes you want to discover these new worlds, especially since they are technically adept at their craft.
The result is electrifying, sounds as authentic as it is captivating, is addictive, and defies categorization. And that’s a good thing!
