Es war ein Herzensprojekt für die Schweizer Sängerin Mélanie Adami: einmal wollte sie Lieder des Schweizer Komponisten Willy Heinz Müller aufnehmen, die lange Jahre völlig unbeachtet geblieben sind. Auch bei Adami standen die Noten der Lieder ihres Urgroßvaters lange im Regal, bis sie sich irgendwann – Corona sei Dank – daran erinnerte. Was sie dann entdeckte entpuppte sich als wahrer Schatz, der nun endlich auf CD zu hören ist.
Adami hat den jungen Bariton Aeneas Humm und die Pianistin Judit Polgar für ihr Projekt gewonnen, das überaus hörenswert ist. Das liegt nicht nur daran, dass die Lieder Müllers allesamt Weltersteinspielungen sind. Es lohnt sich auch sonst, hier einmal genauer hinzuhören. Müllers Musik ist stilistisch fest in der Tradition verwurzelt, zeichnet sich jedoch immer wieder durch originelle Details aus. Oft zeigt sich eine sehr persönliche Handschrift Müllers, etwa in Liedern wie „Träume“ und „Schliesse mir die Augen“. Da lässt zwar musikalisch noch die österreichische Heimat grüßen, doch inhaltliche Dichte und harmonische Besonderheiten entfalten hier eine durchaus individuelle Intensität.
Ein atmosphärischer Kosmos
Insofern ist es ganz und gar nicht übertrieben, von einem Schatz zu sprechen, den Mélanie Adami hier gehoben hat. Mit subtilen Akzentverschiebungen oder harmonisch überraschenden Wendungen versteht es Müller, auf kleinstem Raum einen faszinierenden atmosphärischen Kosmos zu erschaffen. Zusammen mit den Liedern von Franz Ries, Ernö von Dohnanyi und Béla Laszky entsteht hier ein spannendes Gesamtbild. Sängerisch zeigen Adami und Humm Liedkunst vom Feinsten, wobei auch Polgars überaus sensible Begleitung aus jedem der Lieder eine kleine Pretiose macht.
Fazit: Die Mühe hat sich vollumfänglich gelohnt, denn die kurzen, teilweise fast aphoristischen und stark textgebundenen Lieder sind außerordentlich originell, die sängerische Leistung grandios. Eine echte Entdeckung!

Song discoveries: Mélanie Adami sings Willy Heinz Müller
It was a heartfelt project for the Swiss singer Mélanie Adami: she had long wanted to record the songs of the Swiss composer Willy Heinz Müller, which had remained completely overlooked for many years. Even for Adami, the sheet music of her great-grandfather’s songs sat on the shelf for a long time until, thanks to the pandemic, she finally remembered them. What she then discovered turned out to be a true treasure, now finally available on CD.
Adami enlisted the young baritone Aeneas Humm and pianist Judit Polgar for her project, which is truly worth a listen. This is not just because all of Müller’s songs are world premiere recordings. There are plenty of other reasons to listen closely. Müller’s music is stylistically rooted in tradition but consistently distinguished by original details. His very personal style often shines through, particularly in songs like “Träume” and “Schliesse mir die Augen.” While musically still echoing his Austrian homeland, the lyrical depth and harmonic subtleties here reveal a unique intensity.
An atmospheric cosmos
In this respect, it’s certainly not an exaggeration to call the music a treasure that Mélanie Adami has unearthed. With subtle shifts in accent or harmonically surprising turns, Müller manages to create a fascinating atmospheric cosmos in a small space. Alongside the songs of Franz Ries, Ernö von Dohnanyi, and Béla Laszky, a captivating overall picture emerges. Vocally, Adami and Humm demonstrate the finest art of lieder singing, while Polgar’s highly sensitive accompaniment turns each of the songs into a small gem.
Conclusion: The effort was absolutely worthwhile, as the short, sometimes almost aphoristic and highly text-driven songs are exceptionally original, and the vocal performance is outstanding. A real discovery!
