Meine Bücher! „Klein, kleiner, mini“

Dass groß nicht immer besser ist, wissen wir nicht erst seit es Nanotechnologie gibt. Aber was es mit dem Trend zu Minibüchern auf sich hat, ist mir erst kürzlich klar geworden. Ein Hoch auf die Bastlerinnen dieser Welt!

E-Books sind ja eine schöne Sache, wenn der Urlaub lang und der Koffer schwer ist. Mit einem E-Reader spart man so eine Menge Gewicht ein und nimmt trotzdem genügend Lesestoff in die Ferien mit. So weit so bekannt. Wenn man allerdings hinterher der Welt präsentieren möchte, was man alles Schönes auf Amrum/Mallorca/Kreta gelesen hat, dann steht man in der digitalen Wüste. E-Books kann man nicht ins Regal stellen.

Darum sind findige Book-Tokerinnen auf die Idee verfallen, Minibooks herzustellen. Die sind kleiner als eine Streichholzschachtel und bestehen oft nur aus einem Cover, das um zusammengeklebte Moosgummischeiben drapiert wird. Aber: Es sieht aus wie ein sehr kleines Buch. Und genauso lässt es sich auch abfilmen!

Miniaturbücher in schicken Minibücherregalen oder Minibuchwagen sind der „heiße Scheiß“ auf #booktok. Freundliche Bastlerinnen geben Anleitungen zum Designen der Cover, zum Druck oder zur richtigen Stärke des Papiers. Es wird geschnippelt und geklebt, was das Zeug hält, und heraus kommt eine Bibliothek in Puppenhausgröße. Das kann man bescheuert finden, es als Zeitverschwendung und unnötigen Schnickschnack für Influencerinnen in ihrer #booktok-Bubble bezeichnen. Oder – man erkennt an, wieviel Liebe zum Detail, wieviel Mühe und wieviel Kreativität (ich sage nur: selbst gebaute Regale!) in dieses völlig sinnfreie Hobby fließen und erkennt an, dass hier etwas ebenso Unnötiges wie Schönes entsteht. Wer will denn nicht seine Bibliothek in Miniaturform beim nächsten Umzug übersiedeln? Da passt ein ganzes Leserinnenleben in eine Schuhschachtel!

Ist das jetzt sinnlos oder einfach nur niedlich? Es ist vor allem total harmlos. Man kann sich ja nichts Entspannteres vorstellen, als bei einer Tasse Tee und guter Musik Minibücher zu basteln. Und ich gebe zu: Auch wenn ich bislang kein Fan von #booktok war, so hat mich dieser Trend dann doch abgeholt. Die nächste Großnichte oder der nächste Großneffe, die oder der ein Puppenhaus zu Weihnachten bekommt, erhält von mir dazu eine geschmackvoll eingerichtete Minibibliothek, die selbstverständlich alle Werke der Großtante enthält. Ich kauf schon mal einen Stapel Moosgummiblätter …

My Books! „Small, smaller, mini„

We’ve known for a while now that bigger isn’t always better – long before nanotechnology came along. But the appeal of the current trend for mini books only recently clicked for me. Here’s to the crafty women of the world!

E-books are a wonderful invention, especially when your vacation is long and your suitcase is heavy. A single e-reader saves you a ton of weight while still letting you bring along plenty to read. So far, so familiar. But when it comes time to show off what you’ve read on Amrum/Mallorca/Crete, you’re left high and dry in the digital desert. You can’t put e-books on your shelf.

That’s why clever BookTokers came up with the idea of making mini books. They’re smaller than a matchbox and often consist of nothing more than a printed cover wrapped around some glued-together foam rubber discs. But: they look like tiny books. And just like that, they’re ready for the camera!

Miniature books arranged on tiny bookshelves or in little book carts are the hottest trend on #BookTok. Friendly crafters share tutorials on how to design the covers, print them, and choose the right paper thickness. There’s a flurry of cutting and gluing, and the result is a dollhouse-sized library.

You might think it’s silly – a waste of time and just another pointless fad for influencers in their #BookTok bubble. Or – you might recognize the incredible attention to detail, the effort, and the creativity (I mean, handmade shelves!) that go into this utterly pointless yet utterly beautiful hobby. Who wouldn’t want to take their library with them in miniature form during their next move? You could fit an entire reader’s life into a shoebox!

Is it pointless or just plain adorable? More than anything, it’s harmless. Honestly, what’s more relaxing than making mini books over a cup of tea and some good music? And I have to admit: even though I was never really a #BookTok fan, this trend won me over. The next great-niece or great-nephew who gets a dollhouse for Christmas is also getting a tastefully curated mini library from me – naturally featuring all the works of their great-aunt. Time to stock up on foam sheets…
